Happy Citizenship Day!

¡Feliz Día de la Ciudadanía!

Each September, we honor two important milestones in American history: Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. This celebration marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, and the beginning of what was once known as “I Am an American Day,” established in 1940. In 1952, Citizenship Day was officially recognized by President Harry Truman. On this day, Americans are encouraged to reflect on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and what it means to be a U.S. citizen.

At Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL), we’re excited to celebrate this year by highlighting our newly launched Naturalization/Citizenship Program! Through this initiative, dedicated pro bono attorneys assist lawful permanent residents (green-card holders) in completing their documentation for Naturalization—the final step toward becoming a U.S. citizen. Since launching, 12 individuals have been successfully granted U.S. citizenship, 55 individuals have applications pending with the USCIS, and an additional 39 individuals have applications awaiting submission to the USCIS.

A huge thank you to all the pro bono attorneys and interpreters who have generously donated their time and expertise in 2024. Your efforts are transforming lives!

If you or someone you know is a green-card holder interested in becoming a U.S. citizen, apply for help at HVL Citizenship Intake.
