COMMUNICATIONS AND OUTREACH COORDINATOR
Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL) utilizes the pro bono model of legal services delivery to provide free civil legal services to low-income individuals who need assistance with a variety of civil legal issues. As the Communications and Outreach Coordinator, you will play a pivotal role in advancing HVL’s mission by creating and executing communication strategies that amplify HVL’s impact and increasing and supporting relationships with HVL’s strategic community partners.
JOB SUMMARY
The Communications and Outreach Coordinator supports the development and implementation of HVL’s communication strategy to raise awareness of HVL’s services, increase community engagement, and attract clients and pro bono attorneys. The position will also play a key role in coordinating outreach efforts to connect with underserved populations and build partnerships with community organizations. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, creative professional with a strong commitment to social justice and the ability to communicate our mission effectively to diverse audiences.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Strategic Communications: Collaborate with the Pro Bono Director to create and manage a strategic communications plan aligned with HVL’s goals and priorities to increase quality pro bono representation to low-income clients.
- Works with leadership team develop a communications and events calendar.
- Plan components include but are not limited to Pro Bono Month, James B. Sales Boots on the Ground Campaign, pro bono testimonials, and pro bono award nominations.
- Draft internal communications including talking points, messaging documents, backgrounders, bios, press releases, fact sheets, one pagers, and other materials as needed.
- Provide and/or coordinate training and support to staff on communication tools and technologies.
- Track and analyze marketing metrics, outreach efforts, and campaign effectiveness to measure impact and inform future strategies.
- Content Creation: Suggests and implements design ideas and ensures that all designs are consistent with brand guidelines.
- Use Canva to design one pagers, flyers, web and social media graphics, and other materials as needed.
- Create and post social media content via X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
- Maintain HVL’s website via WordPress and execute approved website design and functionality.
- Drafts, designs, edits and proofs content for key publications including the Year in Review, HBA e-bulletin, and brochures.
- Design and send weekly newsletters via MailChimp.
- Outreach: Collaborate with staff to create and manage a strategic outreach plan designed to reach both potential clients and pro bono volunteers.
- Support program staff in developing and maintaining meaningful relationships with community organizations.
- Work with program staff to identify target communities and develop outreach strategies to raise awareness of our services, educate the public about legal rights, and facilitate access to our resources.
- Manage and maintain an up-to-date inventory of outreach materials, including flyers and HVL-branded promotional items. Coordinate the distribution of these materials, ensuring team members are equipped with the appropriate resources for their specific outreach activities.
- Assist pro bono team with planning special events for pro bono volunteers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field or equivalent, relevant experience.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in communications, outreach, or community engagement roles, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages for diverse audiences.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in digital marketing tools and platforms, including social media management, Mailchimp, Canva, and WordPress.
- A commitment to social justice and advocacy for underserved communities.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Annual Salary and Benefits
This position is a full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience, starting at $65,000 with two years’ experience. Benefits include fully paid health, vision and dental insurance; disability and life insurance options; a 401k defined contribution retirement plan with employer match available after one full year of employment, professional development training, monthly parking paid and reimbursed work-related expenses including work-related mileage. HVL currently operates on a hybrid schedule, allowing staff to work remotely for up to 3 days from home with supervisor approval.
